about

I had pieces of these lyrics around for quite some time. When I revisited my notes, as I often do, I saw how the song could flow. At that point, it didn’t take too long to finish up the lyrics. Then I just sat down in the studio and came up with the music. Usually, the lyrics are more difficult for me than the music, and that was the case here.

When we recorded this, Melody, Nathaniel, and I went through the song a few times, and then set out to record scratch tracks. We did a little brainstorming and decided to use the bongos during the music-only sections. We recorded what we thought was a good scratch track, but when we listened back we all felt the recordings were good, really good, good enough to use on the album. The bongos were recorded with two Rode NT1As on two tracks as a stereo pair. The tracks are panned and the bongos sound phenomenal. That got me thinking about the acoustic. I recorded it with the Rodes in stereo as well. I whispered the scratch vocal so as to keep it out of the drum mics and almost used the track as is. I rerecorded the vocal using these whisper-type dynamics which came out great, but wasn’t the easiest thing to deal with in the mix. We asked Chris Kress and Cullin Kress if they thought this song needed bass and at first we weren’t going to use any. But in the end, with a little experimentation and Cullin’s suggestions, we included bass. We felt adding harmonies or lead guitar would make the song too crowded. Chris ran his guitar into the Line 6 and then out the back and into the board, essentially using it as a direct box. Melody came up with a simple piano melody. Love Nathaniel's hi-hat work on this one, too.

lyrics

Verse 1
Standing at the edge of this canyon
Feeling like I'm two feet tall
Have to admit that I'm wonderin'
If my life is worth anything at all

Verse 2
Standing at the edge of this ocean
Waves crashing down on the shore
Every thought wrestling for attention
Is drowned out by this magnificent roar

Chorus
Deepest of oceans, highest of heavens
You are much bigger than the whole of Your creation
The smallest sparrow to the ground will not fall
You look on me with grace and affection and say
I'm not small at all

Verse 3
Gazing up into the heavens
The sun, the moon, and countless stars
With a single breath put them into place
With another could blow them away

Chorus
Deepest of oceans, highest of heavens
You are much bigger than the whole of Your creation
The smallest sparrow to the ground will not fall
You look on me with grace and affection and say
I'm not small at all
