about

Wrote this one evening while killing time before a Zeal rehearsal. I was sitting in the Guitar Center parking lot writing it down and recording it on the cell phone. The entire song came at the same time (while driving). I sang it over and over to myself to make sure I would remember it until I could stop the truck. It took about 20 minutes to get it down. While the lyrics and melody came quickly, it was difficult task for me to get the chord progression right. That’s because I sang the melody for the verse and the melody for the chorus in two different keys. When the dust settled, it turned out to be pretty simple chords.

Tom tried to record this song with the electric many times but it just wasn’t working. When I took out the acoustic (Baden), it only took one take for Nathaniel and I to get the core tracks down. Songs sometimes tell you what instrument needs to be used on them. Nathaniel on drums, Chris Kress bass, Cullin Kress on lead with his Ibanez and Rode NT1-A on his dad’s old amp. Tried some harmonies and they didn’t seem to work, but who knows? We may perform it with harmony some time. Melody's really smokin' on the organ on this one, a bit out of the box for her. I love how this song is fast out of the start, progresses quickly, and then ends as quickly as it starts.

lyrics

Verse 1
I can't forget about what I see when I look in the mirror
I can't forget about the darkness within, couldn't get any clearer

Pre-Chorus 1
This sin-stained life
Look in His eyes
Can't live this lie
No Alibi

Chorus
His life, it's just not fair
For mine, my lies, my life have earned despair
His life, I wonder why
For mine, I'm glad I have no alibi

Verse 2
I can't forget about what He did on the hill known as Calvary
I can't forget, it's as simple as this, took my place and set me free

Pre-Chorus 2
His perfect life
In exchange for mine
It's finally time
No alibi

Chorus
His life, it's just not fair
For mine, my lies, my life have earned despair
His life, I wonder why
For mine, I'm glad I have no alibi
