about

Wrote the lyrics separately from the music. Once done it wasn’t too difficult to come up with a melody. This is one of my favorite songs. Of course I wouldn’t record it if I didn’t really like it, but this one is up there for me. I guess most of the time I hear about rain in a song, it is in the context of disappointment, discouragement, or trials. But I think much of the rain we experience is God’s blessing. For the farmer, rain is everything. God constantly showers us with blessings. We just need to change our perspective.

This was one of the last songs we recorded and it wasn’t an easy one. Nathaniel, Melody and I tried several early takes with seemingly no success. Then just Nathaniel and I tried and came up with nothing. The song was getting bigger and bigger when I really wanted it to be gentler. Chris came over to record bass and did a great job, but even he felt it was moving too much. Finally we went back to our third take, which was really simple, and used that. We used both Melody’s keys (which I feel are so simple and perfectly done) and the drums pretty much as is (with the exception of a couple of small overdubs). Once we started building the song on this simpler foundation, it all came together.

There is a certain type of rain I call farmer’s rain. It’s that gentle rain that farmer’s love that really soaks the fields without doing any damage to their crops. Believe it or not, there are 4 layers of electric guitar on the choruses on this one. The intent was to get a really filled out sound without emphasizing any individual notes and therefore compete with the keys. TH also did a bit of acoustic so there would be an interplay between the keys and the guitar.

TH-electric, 4 layers using Gibson and Boss pedalboard on different settings. TH-acoustic 614.

lyrics

Verse 1
The voice of God, it quietly calls
The farmer’s rain, it gently falls

Chorus
Let it fall, let it fall
Rhythmic raindrops dance
Let it fall, let it fall
Sweet rain holds your hand

Verse 2
The land is dry and tired
But with the rain the blade and blossom grow
The field and forest are on fire
It's time to let it go

Chorus
Let it fall, let it fall
Rhythmic raindrops dance
Let it fall, let it fall
Sweet rain holds your hand

Bridge
This is the moment to listen
They a simple tale
Quiet water, how you glisten
All is well

Chorus
Let it fall, let it fall
Rhythmic raindrops dance
Let it fall, let it fall
Sweet rain holds your hand

Let it fall, let it fall
Rhythmic raindrops dance
Let it fall, let it fall
Sweet rain holds your hand
